Crucial Crew back in South Norfolk

Around 1,000 schoolchildren are to receive vital safety messages when Crucial Crew returns to South Norfolk next week.

Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the week-long event, which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips, takes place at Easton College, Easton, near Norwich, from Monday (July 12th).

The event features theatre-style, interactive scenarios recreating hazardous situations to which children may be exposed in their everyday life.

Year 6 pupils (10/11 year-olds) are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a mock bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do. This is the eighth time Crucial Crew has been held in South Norfolk and the 28th Crucial Crew in Norfolk. Following this event around 24,000 young people will have attended Crucial Crew in the county.

The agencies taking part and the scenarios are as follows:-

Cabinet Member for Fire and Rescue at Norfolk County Council, Harry Humphrey, said: "Crucial Crew continues to go from strength to strength. I have been along to a number of events and have never failed to be impressed by just how effective the hands-on, interactive approach is at engaging youngsters. Public safety remains our top priority and Crucial Crew is an excellent way of teaching young people how to be safe while they have fun."

Jeremy Savage, Chairman of South Norfolk Council said: "Crucial Crew never fails to impress the tens of thousands of young people who have attended because they are not 'scared' into thinking about safety. They pick up these life-saving lessons in a practical but fun way they will never forget. It's unmissable."

Doug Underwood, Crucial Crew co-ordinator for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: “South Norfolk Council has again sponsored this event and deserves our thanks. They are also sponsoring a competition for all those schools attending. Huge thanks to Easton College for again providing the venue.

"The event has been running for eight years now and we continue to educate large numbers of young people with crucial safety messages. In the current financial climate it is refreshing to acknowledge the importance of events like this one which relies heavily upon volunteers and agencies working in partnership. I would also like to thank Gosia Zielinska (Community Safety Advisor) for her huge contribution in arranging this event. Also a special thanks to a number of Rotary Clubs in Norfolk including Watton Rotary, Wymondham Rotary, Attleborough Rotary, Norwich South Rotary, Norwich St Edmund Rotary, Dereham Rotary and Diss Rotary."
