 > Crucial Crew back in West Norfolk

18 April 2008

Hundreds of schoolchildren will learn how to cope with a variety of hazardous situations by experiencing them first-hand when Crucial Crew returns to West Norfolk.

Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the week-long event - which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips - takes place at St Edmunds Community Foundation School, King's Lynn and nearby King's Lynn Fire Station from Monday (April 21).

It features theatre-style, interactive scenarios recreating hazardous situations to which children may be exposed in their everyday life.

Pupils are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do.

The ten agencies taking part and the scenario’s they will present are as follows:-

EDF Energy - Electrical safety
National Grid - Gas safety
Norfolk Constabulary/Safer Neighbourhoods Team  - Cycle theft safety
Norfolk Deaf Association - Disability awareness
H.M. Coastguard - Water/Seaside safety
St John Ambulance - First Aid
Network Rail - Railway safety
King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council's Environmental Health Department -Kitchen safety
Forestry Commission - Forestry safety
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service - Fire safety in the home

Doug Underwood, who co-ordinates Crucial Crew for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This is our second event of the year and is one of four proposed for this year in Norfolk. This is the third annual event to be held in the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk area - the first was held in 2005. There will be nearly 1000 children attend the event and all will learn valuable lessons by taking part. We believe this is the best way for youngsters to learn and absorb these crucial lessons and also have fun in the process.

"I would like to thank St Edmunds for kindly letting us use the school, the Safer West Norfolk Partnership for sponsoring the event, the Rotary Club Volunteers for their support and Munchtime of Great Yarmouth for continued support with refreshments for all our Crucial Crews."

Richard Rockcliffe, Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Protection, said: "I know the previous Crucial Crews in West Norfolk have been a great success and I am sure this year will be no different. The feedback given by both youngsters and teachers continues to underline the great benefit both get from the Crucial Crew experience. I wish everyone involved a successful and enjoyable week."
