Safety with Candles and Ceramic Burners

The recent rise in the use of candles and ceramic burners has also increased the number of resulting fires.

Candlelight and aromatherapy fragrances are relaxing enhancements to our lives. Follow the simple common-sense guide to keep safe when using these and associated items.

DO'S

  • Only use good quality candles. They burn efficiently and cleaner with less smoke. They will have a better wick. Use proper Night-lights, not Tea-lights in ceramic burners.
  • Put candles into suitable holders. Large heavy candles will topple from holders that are too small.
  • Place the candle into the holder or ceramic burner then onto non-flammable surfaces. The heat is easily transmitted especially through ceramic burners.
  • Use ceramic burners that are well ventilated. They will certainly get very hot and might cause the flame to get larger in the burner chamber (flaring).
  • Position the candle or burner before lighting. Similarly apply fragrance products before lighting.
Extinguish all candles and burners before going to bed.
Increase your safety by fitting a smoke alarm wherever you burn candles or use fragrance burners.

DON'TS

  • Never place lighted candles or burners close to curtains, bedding or on windowsills or television sets.
  • Never place them in the reach of children or where they could be knocked over by pets.
  • Never move candles or burners once they are lit, unless they are contained in proper lantern type holders.
  • Never lean over lighted candles and burners it could ignite your clothing
  • Never leave candles and burners unattended. Candles will burn down and fragrance burners will dry out.
