Watton is a busy, bustling, market town in the district of Breckland. It is situated on the crossroads of the A1075 Dereham – Thetford road and the B1108 Brandon – Norwich road, about 25 miles from Norwich. The parish covers an area of 2.8 sq miles with approximately 7000 inhabitants.
As with most market towns the majority of its businesses are found on the main high street. The market is on a Wednesday, there is also a Farmer's market on the first Saturday every month, bringing shoppers in from all over the countryside and boosting the trade in the town centre shops. There are shops of all kinds here from your local friendly newsagent or bakery to the larger shops and supermarket.
Personnel from Watton are employed on a Retained Duty System; this means they have other primary employment, from bricklayer and car mechanic to electrician and insurance broker. This diversity of primary employment gives the firefighters an added advantage in dealing with the complexity of emergency situations they are called to.
They are alerted for emergency calls by pager day or night when their help is required. 24hours per day 365 days per year the Fire Fighters from Watton provide emergency cover for the people of Norfolk
