ire and Rescue Service recognises excellence at annual awards evening

Bravery, excellence and commitment will be officially recognised later this week at the annual Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service awards evening.

Awards to be presented include Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, Certificates of Commendation, the Community Partnership Award and the Cadet of the Year Award.

Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Protection Richard Rockcliffe, said: "The annual awards evening is a chance for the efforts of a wide range of people to receive some official recognition. All the recipients have in some way contributed to making the county council's fire and rescue service what it is; a service of which we can all be rightly proud."

Richard Elliott, Chief Fire Officer for Norfolk, said the awards evening was a chance for the service to officially recognise excellence within its own ranks.

He said: "Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service staff consistently attain high standards and this is our chance to celebrate just a few of the more notable examples of that continued excellence. It is always a particular pleasure to see people receive their long service and good conduct medals which exemplify the dedication and commitment of the people who work for our service and my thanks go to the Lord Lieutenant,  Richard Jewson for finding time to present them."

Those receiving Certificates of Commendation from the Chief Fire Officer include two sisters, Olivia (7) and Leah (14) Secretan, who raised the alarm after coming across a house fire in Gorleston on their way to school.

Mr Elliott praised the two girls' actions, adding: "Olivia and Leah showed remarkable courage and determination by not giving up in their efforts to raise the alarm and there is little doubt their efforts helped save lives. Unfortunately a man's body was found in the house following the fire but the fire officers who attended the scene are sure that the persistence of the two sisters, who did everything they could and didn't just give up, helped saved the lives of neighbours."

The evening will take place at the John Innes Centre in Colney at 7.30pm on Friday November 21.
