More than 18,000 youngsters now safer thanks to Crucial Crew
Interactive safety event Crucial Crew will see it's 18,000th Norfolk youngster take part next week when it returns to the west of the county.
Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the week-long event, which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips, takes place at St Edmunds Community Foundation School, King's Lynn and King's Lynn Fire Station from Monday April 27 through to Friday May 1.
The event features theatre-style, interactive scenarios recreating hazardous situations to which children may be exposed in their everyday life.
Year 6 pupils (10/11 year olds) are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do.
Up to 1000 children will attend the week long event which is the second event to be held in Norfolk in 2009, the 23rd Crucial Crew event in Norfolk and the fifth time it's been held in King's Lynn. The agencies taking part and their scenarios are:
Norfolk County Council - Trading Standards - Safe and Legal Shopping
EDF Energy - Electrical Safety
National Grid - Gas Safety
Norfolk Youth Offending Team - Anti Bullying
H.M. Coastguard - Seaside Safety
Forestry Commission - Forestry Safety
St John Ambulance - First Aid
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service - Fire Safety in the Home
Norfolk Disability Forum - Deaf Awareness
Norfolk Constabulary - Personal Safety
Richard Rockcliffe, Cabinet Member of Fire and Community Protection, said: "The fact that more than 18,000 young people from Norfolk have now taken part in Crucial Crew is testament to all those who have helped organise these events over the years. That's more than 18,000 youngsters who have learned vital and memorable safety lessons which should stand them in good stead. It is a fantastic achievement for all those involved and I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible, especially the partners who lead the scenarios, making them both interesting and relevant."
Doug Underwood, Crucial Crew co-ordinator for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: "I have been part of Crucial Crew since its inception in 2002. I have also been involved in Community Fire Safety for ten years and these events are the best form of education I have ever seen. The short, focussed messages remain with the young people for the rest of their lives. I meet some of them who attended the earlier events and they can still remember everything in fine detail. There is no question in my mind that this is an impressive and cost effective way to teach important messages to all.
Following this event 18,385 young people will have attended Crucial Crew since it started in Norfolk and my thanks go to all the local volunteers who help with every one, on this occasion King's Lynn and West Norfolk Rotary Clubs."
Following the Breckland Crucial Crew earlier this year one Deputy Headteacher, wrote: "A fantastic partnership between agencies and schools. A great way to bring the community together and to help the general public understand the support they have from different services. They love it everytime they come and they learn so much. It may save their life or help them to save a life in future. What could be more important?"
