Around a thousand school children will learn vital lessons in safety next week as Crucial Crew returns to Breckland.
Co-ordinated by Norfolk County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, the week-long event -which uses ten-minute interactive sessions to teach crucial safety tips - takes place at Wayland High School, Watton from Monday (March 10).
It features theatre-style, interactive scenarios recreating hazardous situations to which children may be exposed in their everyday life.
Pupils are placed in situations which simulate potential danger, such as a bedroom fire. The experiences seek, within a controlled environment, to raise awareness and provide practical and memorable advice on what to do.
The ten agencies taking part this time are:
British Railway Police/Network Rail - Railway Safety/Anti Social Behaviour
EDF Energy - Electrical Safety
Norfolk Deaf Association - Disability Awareness
National Grid - Gas Safety
H.M. Coastguard - Water/Seaside Safety
Norfolk Trading Standards - Safer Shopping
Breckland District Council/ Forestry Commission - Risky Rubbish
St John Ambulance - First Aid
Norfolk Constabulary/Safer Neighbourhoods Team - Personal Safety
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service - Fire Safety
Doug Underwood, who co-ordinates Crucial Crew for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "This is the first of four such events in Norfolk for 2008 and the second Crucial Crew to be held in the Breckland area. The first one was last year and proved a real success, which I am sure will be the case again.
I would like to thank Wayland High School for allowing us use of their building, the local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership for sponsoring the goodie bags and the local Rotary clubs will once again be helping provide volunteers - particularly Watton Rotary."
Richard Rockcliffe, Cabinet Member for Fire and Community Protection, said: "The great thing about Crucial Crew is that youngsters learn vital lessons whilst having fun, something that means the key safety messages remain memorable. I am sure all those involved, especially the youngsters will enjoy the experience."
Steve Askew, Executive Member for Community Engagement at Breckland Council commented that Anti-social Behaviour was a ‘hot topic’ within the community, adding: "Crucial Crew is a fantastic initiative that encourages young people to live and behave in such a way that raises awareness to other peoples concerns. At the same time it increases safety for our younger people and the wider community at large. "
