Road Casualty Reduction

What to do when a fire engine approaches

When you hear or see a fire engine approaching you on the way to an emergency do you know what to do?

We are committed to attending the scene of an emergency as soon as possible, but not in a way which presents a danger to either other road users. Here are a few tips:

do not panic or make an erratic manoeuvre

stopping your vehicle may not be helpful, particularly if this blocks the road

consider the route of the fire appliance and take action to allow it to pass

if necessary pull over to the side of the road but do not endanger other road users
