Wymondham Fire Cadets
The Fire Cadet scheme was introduced into Norfolk Fire Service by Chief Fire Officer Hogg in 1984. The aim of the Cadets was to teach young people aged between 13 and 18 fire-fighting skills and life skills within a disciplined environment.
Wymondham Fire Cadets was set up during this time. Over the years the Fire Cadets has become more popular with the young people in the surrounding areas. We currently have 12 cadets who regularly meet on a Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday, to take part in theory and practical sessions of Fire-fighting skills, Fitness Training, Preservation Work and general duties around the Fire Station. Each year the cadets work towards Star Awards. The Star Awards is a programme which assesses the development of each cadet. There are 5 Stars in total with Star 1 being focused on basic skills and Star 5 focusing on more complex skills. For each star the cadets have to demonstrate their skills and knowledge through practical assessments and theory sessions. Work for the star awards are carried out on a Thursday night through drills and lectures and each cadet maintains a portfolio recording there development.
Wymondham Fire Cadets is currently run by Crew Manager Ken Weston-Gare. He is supported by a small team of leaders who have all been through the cadet scheme over the last 22 years.
